Iconic Schatzlein Saddle Shop In Minneapolis Announces Closure After 115 Years Of Service

If you're a fan of saddle shopping, you'll be sad to learn that Chatzlein's Saddle Shop, a staple in the South Minneapolis community for over 115 years, is closing it's doors so that the dedicated family members that run the store can enjoy a well deserved retirement.

The Schatzlein Saddle shop is a family business that was established in 1907, and has been a go-to destination for horse riders and saddle enthusiasts alike, offering a wide range of English and Western clothing, boots, hats, helmets, jeans, jackets, riding gear, and saddles & tack from well loved brands, alongside a big selection of accessories.

Schatzlein Saddle Shop released a statement about their closure via their Facebook page on August 28th 2022, which reads:

"Dear friends and valued customers, It is with a heavy heart, we have decided the time has come to close Schatzlein Saddle Shop. Schatzlein's has been doing business on Lake Street for 115 years and now is the time for some of the family members to retire.

It's been an incredible ride. Ultimately we would love to stay open, but at this time it is not possible. What's carried us on so long are all of our valued and loyal customers who have shopped at Schatzlein's for so long.

We will be sad to see the store close and will miss seeing each and everyone of you and know you will too. We can’t thank you enough for all your support over the years. We wouldn't have made it without you.

Thank you again from the entire Schatzlein Family. Liquidation sale will start August 29th"

In an interview with Fox 9, Janet Schatzlein said "I'm sad because of all the people who come to see me and need my help. I do a lot of saddle fittings and help people with their horse problems"

Janet's grandfather Emil opened the store in 1907 with a focus on providing harnesses, and years later, when her father introduced boots, cowboy hats and a variety of other sought after items to their shelves, the store skyrocketed in popularity, but with modern day supply chain issues and the siblings who work at the shop advancing in age, they have made the decision to sell the building and close the shop for good, so that they can enjoy a well deserved retirement.

"I wanted to retire, and with the four of us only working here, that would be three. Then my next brother wants to retire too. Why not retire on a good note," said Schatzlein.

We think it's safe to say that the iconic shop will be dearly missed by the many loyal customers in the equestrian community in Minnesota and beyond.

Schatzlein Saddle shop is offering 25% off all regular price items and an extra *20% off of clearance items, so if you're looking to make a purchase, now is a great time to support a great local business and send your well wishes.

You can visit the store's website here, or stop at the shop at Lake St, Uptown Minneapolis, to make the most of the sale and say farewell.
