Description

Dakota is a 20 yr old QH mare. We're closing down our lesson program and she still has plenty of years in her. She's an absolute rockstar and has been the backbone of the program.

She's the horse I can put anyone on. Has VERY smooth flat gaits, Won't bounce anyone out of the tack. Goes E & W, can both direct and neck rein and has a soft mouth. Very comfortable for bareback riding with low withers and a wide back. Will happily carry beginners, but has buttons for advanced riders (shoulder in, haunches in, leg yield, walk pirouette). She'll adjust her stride based on the rider she's carrying. Can do turns on the fore & haunches, and reverse. She doesn't love standing still (she'd rather be working!), but will do it as long as you're not a pushover. Willing over fences, not a stylish jumper but a great teacher.

Low maintenance, barefoot, and sound. She's our easiest keeper. Our herd lives primarily out so she's accustomed to lots of turnout in all weather. Stands tied, loads well, not bothered by clipping or mane pulling. Her only major expense is we inject her hocks in winter to keep her comfortable.

Confident and happy on trail, no problems being first or last in line. If you plan to trail ride heavily on gravel, she would likely appreciate easy boots or front shoes. She can sit for 3 weeks and get right back to work without fuss. She can also ride double.

Dakota is a hussy on her heat cycle, but we've found she's happiest if she lives with a gelding or two so she can flirt and get all her boy sniffs. She will crib, but it's not incessant. We've noticed she doesn't do it when grass is plentiful. We do collar her in winter and she won't try once it's on. She's NOT the horse who is going to attach herself to the fence & cause damage.

I can't say enough good things, she's an all around great horse who has safely carried riders from age 6-60! Located in Williamsburg, VA. Available at the end of August, when our summer session ends.

Price is negotiable to the right home, we require right of first refusal. Farm visit is required to try her out before sale.
