Around here, we refer to Sweet Sally as our big, comfy couch and that may be the best way to explain what it feels like to ride her.
Sally is only being offered for sale because of the unexpected passing of our father. This is not an easy sale, and finding a good home for her matters very much to us.
She is a striking 18 year old black and white tobiano Friesian/Tennessee Walking Horse cross mare. She stands 15.1 hands. With her bold markings, black head and neck, exceptionally long wavy mane and tail, substantial build, and strong hindquarter, Sweet Sally has the kind of presence that immediately catches your attention. In fact, she regularly draws the attention of people driving down our road, who slow down or stop just to look at her. She is hard not to notice, whether she is standing in the pasture or carrying a rider.
Sally has good bone and size, is quiet, naturally gaited, and wonderfully smooth. She is the kind of horse you can settle into, relax on, and simply enjoy. Her comfortable gaits make her especially nice for anyone who doesn’t want to bounce around at a trot.
For at least the past three years, possibly more, Sally has been part of a children’s summer camp and lesson program, where she has been ridden by beginners as well as intermediate riders. She has patiently carried riders while they learned and she has been super patient when their cues were not perfect. She was not only trusted with students but we often were told how the instructors loved Sally and happily chose to ride her themselves because she is so smooth, comfortable, and enjoyable.
Sally has been ridden both English and Western. She direct reins, stops, backs, and moves willingly through her natural gait at different speeds. She is quiet under saddle and has been ridden alone as well as with other horses.
One of the things to note about Sally is that she is not limited to one type or size of rider. Children, women, and men have all been able to ride and enjoy her. She has the quiet, forgiving nature that can be reassuring for a less experienced rider, while her substantial build gives her enough size and substance to comfortably suit an adult man.
Sally could be a wonderful option for a someone looking for a “husband-safe” type of horse. At the same time, she certainly does not have to belong to only one member of the family. She is the kind of mare children and adults can share and enjoy together.
Sally has been trail ridden across the hills and varied terrain of Northeast Pennsylvania. She is accustomed to road traffic, wildlife, cattle, farm machinery, and the everyday activity that comes with life on a farm and in a busy camp program. She has experience outside the arena and is an easygoing mare who does well in many different situations.
Each year, Sally traditionally had time off during the late fall and winter before returning to work for the next season. She has always handled that schedule well and comes back to riding without a problem. She’s a handy choice if you don’t necessarily ride in every season! The break doesn’t change who she is!
Sally is just as easygoing on the ground. She is friendly and social, enjoys attention and scratches, and is pretty easy to catch. She will often follow you around to see what you are doing and is happy to be included.
Our two year old especially loves visiting Sweet Sally in the pasture, bringing her treats, and scratching on her. Sally happily soaks up every bit of the attention. Even our 10 month old son loves spending time with her. While we carry him, he likes to hold onto Sally’s lead rope and “help” walk her around with us.
Sally stands for mounting and dismounting, bathes, and loads and unloads from the trailer. She is patient for the farrier and stands calmly through the entire shoeing process, including being hot shod.
She has routinely been kept shod during the riding season and barefoot for approximately half of each year. Her teeth were floated in August 2026.
She has lived both outside in the pasture and in a stall and gets along with mares and geldings. She is simply a friendly, uncomplicated, easygoing horse who is pleasant to ride and enjoyable to have around.
Sally could be a wonderful match for someone who’s looking for comfort, experience, and a quiet nature but still wants a horse with truly standout looks. Whether her owner wants to enjoy leisurely trail rides, share one horse among different members of the family, or simply have a beautiful and affectionate mare waiting in the pasture, Sweet Sally has a great deal to offer.

Our dad spent his lifetime in the horse industry and more than 40 years building his life with horses on our family farm. We are the third generation of our family here, and horses have always been a big part of our lives. We are especially proud of the lesson and camp horses we have right now. They are honestly one of the best groups we have ever had, and finding good homes for them matters a great deal to us.
