Katie is a 20 year old, 14.3 hand beautiful black Quarter Horse mare who has been part of our family for over ten years. She is incredibly sweet, loves people, and is about as easygoing and dependable as they come.

Katie has been part of our family long enough to teach another generation of young riders. Funny enough somewhere along the way, she even earned herself a second name. Some of the kids call her Katie, some know her as Lucy, and occasionally we just put it all together and call her Katie Lucy. So don’t be confused if you hear us referring to her by either name. She answers to both and doesn’t seem to mind which one you use, especially if you’re waiting at the gate to give her some feed or attention!

For the past five years, Katie has been used in a children’s summer camp, as well as in lessons and for lead line rides. Complete beginners can ride her independently, and children can groom and tack her. She is very tolerant of unbalanced riders and all the normal mistakes that come with learning. There really isn’t much that bothers her, and she handles children, dogs, traffic, wildlife, and all kinds of activity and commotion without an issue.

Just within the last week, Katie has been ridden by a two year old, a four year old, and an eight year old. Each child had a different skill level and asked different things of her. Katie adjusted to every one of them and was a perfect angel.

Katie is the kind of mare who makes riding a horse look easy. She takes care of her riders and adjusts to what each person needs from her. She is patient and forgiving with beginners, but she isn’t limited to beginner riders. She has a lot of training in her younger years, so someone with more experience can ask her for more and have plenty of fun with her. She neck reins and has an excellent handle. She stops and steers easily and is enjoyable for a wide range of riders. Because of her neck reining abilities, we have mostly focused on riding her western. However she has been ridden English as well at the children’s camp.

Katie has been ridden both in the arena and out on the trails. She will trail ride alone or with a group, crosses water, and goes willingly up and down different terrain. She stands to mount and can also be ridden bareback.

She is the same dependable horse from one day to the next. You can give her time off, bring her back out, and she doesn’t miss a beat. She doesn’t need to be ridden regularly to remain calm and manageable.

On the ground, Katie is easy to catch and walks calmly beside whoever is leading her, including children and complete beginners. She bathes, ties, and stands well for the farrier. She loads and hauls calmly and is currently shod but spends half the year barefoot too. Her teeth were also just done a few weeks ago and the equine dentist said they are in great condition.

Katie is higher up in the herd dynamics in the pasture, but she isn’t any trouble and has lived successfully with different groups of mares and geldings at several different farm locations. She's easy to catch and when we whistle for her, she comes. :)

Katie does have a few white saddle and cinch marks on her back and in her cinch area. They were already there when she came to our family more than a decade ago, just little marks from the many years she spent carrying riders before she ever came to us.

Katie has a very big heart. At 14.3 hands, she is an approachable size for children while still being substantial enough for smaller adults, and she has been ridden and enjoyed by both. She may not take up much room in the barn but she has certainly made a big place for herself in our family.

With her forgiving nature, extensive experience, and easygoing personality, Katie would make a wonderful first horse for someone. We would love to see her become a treasured part of a child’s life… the horse they learn with, love on, and remember as a special part of their childhood.

More than anything, we want Katie to find the home that is truly right for her… one that understands what a special mare she is and will love, appreciate, and care for her through all the years ahead.

Katie is only being offered for sale because of the unexpected passing of our father. This is not an easy sale, and finding a good home for her matters very much to us.

Our dad spent his lifetime in the horse industry and more than 40 years building his life with horses on our family farm. We are the third generation of our family here, and horses have always been a big part of our lives. We are especially proud of the lesson and camp horses we have right now. They are honestly one of the best groups we have ever had, and finding good homes for them matters a great deal to us.
