If you've been looking for a great trail partner to go out alone or with a group of friends, then Elmo is your guy! Elmo is a 2015, registered breeding stock POA that has a nice stocky build to him and easily carries adult riders. He looks more like a Quarter Pony and if it wasn't for the papers, it would be hard to believe he's a POA. He was initially trained by a young cowgirl that used him as a project prior to us taking him on a year ago. She did a wonderful job with him and since we've had him, he's been used as a trail horse as we've put more miles on him. In the last year, he's been on short and long day rides, over-night camping trips, went to the Iowa Horse Fair and participated in a cattle working clinic and competed in the Extreme Trail Challenge, he's played with cattle and done a little bit of sorting for fun and has gone through an area obstacle course numerous times and also taken to a small local schooling show.

Elmo has a big heart and always gives it his all. There are times we think he forgets that he isn't as big as some other horses; when asked to go over large logs or up the Texas two-step he just goes and will try for you. He does not balk at an obstacle in front of him. On the trails he's been very sure footed and handles big steep hills like a champ. If the trail is a little slick or sticky from the rain, no problem, he goes and keeps you safe. He is totally fine going out on his own and happy to ride in a group. He walks out and keeps up with full-sized horses and will ride in any position on the trail. Given the choice and his cadence, he will normally be towards the front and if you want, he will lead the charge! If something does 'spook' Elmo, he doesn't bolt or try to take you off to save himself, he'll just stutter a step and look at what is going on. He is a smart horse that will stay under you.

We feel Elmo could be a great step-up horse for a handy kid and a horse to be able to work with more and take to play days, small youth rodeos or local ranch classes. In the arena, he walks, trots and lopes. He stays pretty collected but could use a bit more work in this area. Our focus in the last year has been primarily on the trails and exposing him to a variety of things.

One day, we believe he will be an amazing beginners horse and will teach a new rider the ropes but for now, he is likely best suited for an advanced beginner/intermediate kid and could serve as a project for another handy cowboy looking to take him up another level. He'd also be great for an adult looking for a trusty and steady trail partner to conquer new adventures!

Elmo loves people and will come when you call him. He is easy to catch, loves to be groomed, stands to be bathed and just wants to be your friend. He tacks up nicely, picks up his feet and is great for the farrier. He pastures well with either mares or geldings. He's been in pasture groups with multiples and tends to be more middle of the pecking order. He gets along well with everyone and truly just wants to be everyone's friend.

We do want to point out that Elmo has two scars, one on his front knee and one on the back leg in front of the hock. The scar on knee was there before we acquired him and was an old injury. The small mark on the back leg he caught on a stick last year and it’s healed up and barely noticeable. There are no soundness issues, and they are just cosmetic. Elmo is UTD on his annual vaccines, deworming and has a current negative Coggins test that was pulled in March. PPE's are welcome at requester's expense.
