Clipper’s Young Gun is a gorgeous 5-year-old, 14.1-hand dappled buckskin gelding, registered as a purebred Mountain Pleasure Horse, and he is the kind of young horse that makes you stop scrolling and take a second look.
But Clipper is more than a pretty color and a smooth gait. He is a horse with a heart.
FIRST, LET US INTRODUCE YOU TO THE MOUNTAIN PLEASURE HORSE
Clipper belongs to one of Kentucky’s most historic—and rarest—horse breeds.
The Mountain Pleasure Horse has been developed in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky for more than 200 traceable years. These were the horses Kentucky families depended on before paved roads and modern transportation. They carried farmers, doctors, teachers, preachers, mail carriers, and families through some of the roughest country imaginable.
Today, only around 1,500 purebred Mountain Pleasure Horses remain worldwide, making the breed critically endangered. The Mountain Pleasure Horse Association is the foundation stock of North American gaited breeds, with its influence found in breeds such as the Tennessee Walking Horse, Missouri Fox Trotter, Rocky Mountain Horse and Kentucky Mountain Horse.
They are known for their natural four-beat gait, sure-footedness, intelligence, willingness and people-oriented personalities—qualities that earned them the nickname “The Boy Scout Breed.”
And Clipper is a wonderful example of exactly why this breed has such a devoted following.
