"Chuck" Sorrel Gelding Quarter Horse

Chuck may be a horse who is built like a tank, but he has the personality of a golden retriever.

Chuck is only being offered for sale because of the unexpected passing of our father. This is not an easy sale, and finding a good home for him matters very much to us.

He is a handsome 15 year old sorrel Quarter Horse gelding standing 14.3 hands. Chuck has a wonderful stocky build, substantial bone, large, solid hooves, beautiful face, and a rich sorrel coat. He truly is a handsome boy that stands out.

Our dad used to joke, “It takes just as much feed to feed an ugly one as it does a pretty one.” Chuck was always one of the pretty ones and undoubtedly one of the reasons my Dad enjoyed feeding him everyday and looking out at the pasture so much.

His name is Chuck, but over the years he has also become Chucky, Charles, Good Luck Chuck, and even Chuckadoodles. A horse this loved rarely ends up with only one name!

Chuck is usually one of the first horses waiting to meet you at the gate. He is exceptionally easy to catch…occasionally almost too easy if you are trying to get another horse out… because he genuinely enjoys people, attention, and being included in whatever is happening. Once you are in the pasture, it is not unusual for him to follow you around like a dog just to see what you are doing. He is simply a horse who wants to be with you.

Chuck is also the kind of horse you enjoy looking out the window and seeing in your pasture. His friendly personality, dependable nature, and willingness to participate make him a pleasure in every way.

For at least the last five years and maybe more, Chuck has been part of a children’s summer camp program. Many children have taken their very first riding lesson on him. Campers have been able to catch him, lead him, groom him, pick up his feet, and ride him independently. His excellent manners and genuine enjoyment of people have made him the kind of horse children can learn from both in and out of the saddle.

Chuck has been enjoyed by children and beginners as well as more experienced adults. He is patient and forgiving of a beginner’s imperfect cues. Yet he is also willing and responsive enough to be fun to ride for someone with more experience. Based on our years of experience with him, we believe he could suit many different riders, including beginners.

One of the things that makes Chuck so special is that he doesn’t have to belong to only one member of the family. He can patiently carry a child through those important first lessons, give Mom a smooth and enjoyable ride, and still have the substance to comfortably work for Dad. At the same time, he is willing and responsive enough that a more experienced rider will not quickly outgrow him. He is truly the kind of horse an entire family could ride, love, and build memories around. We know from experience just how hard it is to find another horse like him!

Chuck has primarily been ridden Western. He moves willingly at a walk, jog, lope and picks up both leads. His gaits are smooth and comfortable and he is simply a fun horse to ride. He has been ridden in the arena, willingly rides out alone, and is also comfortable riding with a group.

His trail experience includes steep hills, rocky footing, bridges, water, thick brush, woods, open fields, roads and traffic, wildlife, dogs, bicycles, vehicles, farm machinery, equipment, and trail obstacles. Chuck has even been ridden across the historic battlefields at Gettysburg National Military Park. He is accustomed to leaving the arena and experiencing the world out there.

Chuck also has experience at open shows. A friend of our dad’s showed him in trail classes, where he won. Between his years at camp, extensive trail experience, and success in trail classes, we think Chuck could make a phenomenal 4-H horse for the right child and family. He could return to local open shows, trail classes, or ranch style events, or simply be appreciated as the seasoned family and trail horse he already is.

Chuck traditionally has the late fall and winter off before returning to work in the spring. He has consistently handled that time off well and comes back to riding easily. He’s a handy horse for a family or rider whose schedule may change with the seasons or finds there are times when they aren’t riding as much.

He is comfortable living either outside in the pasture or spending time in a stall and gets along with both mares and geldings.

Chuck’s ground manners are one of the qualities that made him so valuable in a children’s program. He ties, stands quietly for mounting, accepts fly spray, bathes, picks up all four feet, and behaves well for the farrier. He loads, unloads, and hauls well.

He is currently shod but has routinely been kept barefoot for approximately half of each year. His teeth were floated in August 2026. Chuck has no known vices, health concerns, or special maintenance requirements. He’s an all around easy keeper.

In all the years we have known and used Chuck, we honestly cannot think of a time when he was a problem. He has always been a kind, willing, dependable horse for our family and camp program.

Chuck was also one of our dad’s personal favorites, which makes him extra meaningful to our family. He is a horse we would never be offering if circumstances were different. We continue to revisit whether there is any possible way for us to keep him because horses that are steady, useful, and enjoyable are simply not easy to replace.

More than anything, we want Chuck to go to a home that will love him as much as we do. We hope his next person or family will appreciate everything he can do, but also enjoy all the little things that make him Chuck… seeing his face waiting at the gate, calling him by one of his many nicknames, giving him the attention he loves, and simply enjoying the sight of him out in the pasture.

We want him to continue having a purpose and being included, whether that means teaching another child, attending 4H and open shows, exploring new trails, or becoming someone’s much loved family horse. Chuck has given our family and so many children years of dependable service, patience, and companionship. He deserves a home where he will not merely be used but genuinely known, appreciated, and treasured. We will be thoughtful about where he goes because we want his next chapter to be lasting and every bit as good as the horse he has always been for us.

Our dad spent his lifetime in the horse industry and more than 40 years building his life with horses on our family farm. We are the third generation of our family here, and horses have always been a big part of our lives. We are especially proud of the lesson and camp horses we have right now. They are honestly one of the best groups we have ever had, and finding good homes for them matters a great deal to us.
