A POA horse, also known as a Pony of the Americas (POA), is a breed of pony developed in the United States. Their name comes from their unique appearance—they have an Appaloosa-type spotted coat pattern and stocky, compact bodies that resemble a small horse rather than a pony. The ancestor of the POA was first bred by Jan Poole in Norwalk, Iowa, in 1954. He crossed two ponies together to create what he called “an improved riding type of pony” for his daughter's riding pleasure. This new breed quickly became popular with children across America and eventually become recognized as its own distinct breed by 1972.
