  1. Always make sure the water you’re providing is fresh and clean.
Water is the most important element in your horse’s diet. Hot weather and exercise will increase your horse’s water intake, so make sure you are providing enough.

  2. Weighing out feeds is a must.
Always go by weight and not volume when calculating the amount of feed your horse should have.
  1. Feed little and often - no more than 2kg per meal.
Naturally, horses are trickle feeders and should not be fed large amounts at any one time.

  2. Make sure it’s good quality feed.
Always store your feed in the correct place, this should be stated on the packaging. Make sure it’s in a safe place where no pests can get into it. Never feed your horse moldy feed, this can cause health issues.

  3. Check you are providing the right amount of feed for your horse.
All horse’s nutrient requirements are initially determined by their body weight. Always calculate your horse’s feed according to how much they weigh.

  4. If you have to make changes to your horse’s feed, make them gradually.
Horses need time to adapt their body to feed changes. If changes are made too quickly this can cause Coli and other health issues that can easily be avoided by gradual change.

  5. Make sure you are exercising your horse at the right times around feeds.
After cereal-based meals you should always give your horse an hour to digest, however, following fiber-based meals exercise can take place straight away.

  6. Try to feed your horse at the same time each day.
This is just to keep your four-legged friend happy. It gets them into the swing of a routine and horses are a creature of habit.

  7. Work out how much feed you should give your horse according to the amount of work done.
It’s not always a good idea to increase feed if the workload is increasing. This can cause health problems. Cereal feeds should be reduced on days off, as a rough guide, reduce by half from the evening before compared to the evening after.

  8. Forage is fiber… feed plenty of forage.
Fiber helps keep digestive health in check. Forage should not be restricted to less than 1.5% of body weight per day.
