Galicenos of Suwannee is a 501(c)3 corporation established in 2006 dedicated to the conservation of Galiceño horses. We also provide educational opportunities concerning the history of horses in the Americas. Our breeding strategy focuses on increasing genetic diversity within the herd while preserving pure Galiceño stock. We have the largest herd of Galiceños in the world! They are listed as "Critically Endangered" by The Livestock Conservancy.
Galiceños are direct descendants of the first horses brought to the Americas by Columbus and Cortes. The Galiceño breed was introduced to southern Mexico by Cortes in 1519 and remained isolated there until many were brought into the United States in the 1950's and '60's.
