A rare find! This is a beautifully tooled Fred Mueller Roping saddle with a 15.5ins seat, a 28ins skirt and regular QH bars (measured at 6.5ins at the gullet). Made in the 1960’s, this is made in medium oil leather, and is exquisitely tooled with prairie rose design and a stitched leather seat in contrasting color.
Fred Mueller was born in St Louis (into a saddle and harness making family) some time in the 1860’s. His first shop was in Denver, CO in 1891, and he sold the shop to his employees in 1917. Fred died in 1924. The saddle shop closed in the 1950’s, and the western wear portion of the store closed in the 1980’s. Mueller advocated the one stop shop concept in marketing. The cowboy could buy his saddle, hat, spurs, boots, jeans, etc. all in one store. This concept has been the most successful concept for many other saddle-makers – Capriola, Kings Saddlery, Ryons, Luskeys, Porters, to name but a few. Mueller saddles were known for their strong, sturdy and dependable qualities, essential for any hard working cowboy.
