About our business
Coolhorse's beginnings can be indirectly traced back to the late 1960’s. Tommy Foust started Foust Feed & Supply, a family owned and operated feed store located in Amarillo, Texas. The Foust family built their business and reputation on a few basic core values. A strong work ethic and old fashioned honesty. Their customers were their friends and they worked their tails off to make sure they didn't let their friends down.

Our humble story actually begins in 1989 when the Harris family purchased this local feed store from the Foust family. Straight out of college, we could tell you we had grand visions of growth and long term success but the fact was, we were in “survival mode” just trying to hold every penny together and learn as each day passed. No experience in retail and “a bunch” of money borrowed from generous relatives, a local bank, and the Small Business Administration resulted in the motivation to work long days. Hauling hay was our specialty.

By 1997 we had outgrown our original store in Amarillo and ground breaking began on our current location on South Bell St. More debt, more inventory, more vendors, more sales, more work, and more fun.

As the year 1999 rolled around the “dot com” era had hit America. Sitting around the kitchen table talking with family and friends one evening, the idea and name of our online store was born. On June 18th 1999, we officially launched Coolhorse We were not the typical internet story of that time. We were not immediately flooded with orders, we were not offered stupid amounts of money by investors, we did not experience astronomical growth, and we did not close our doors the following years during the "dot com bust". We just kept inching forward, both in our traditional feed store business and our newly found mail order tack business.

As our business grew, we started looking for another avenue to distinguish ourselves further. In 2003 we took our next step, opening the doors of our trailer sales and service at our existing location in Amarillo. With the addition of more office space and a full service trailer service center, we were able to offer trailers throughout North America and saddles & tack across the globe. As business evolved, we could see our national and international markets growing. We were known by many more of our customers as Coolhorse than Foust so we officially changed our name in 2010 to Coolhorse.

We have been very blessed in this journey of over 24 years. Our 3 kids have grown up around and helping in the business during school breaks and are entrenched in the horse and rodeo lifestyle. Our greatest accomplishment in this time? The length of our list of friends and relationships formed with our customers, employees, and vendors over the years. Thanks folks.

Happy Trails,

The Harris Family
