Stunning, well broke, athletic and loving 13 year old Quarab gelding
Every once In a while a horse comes along with such a delightful disposition and charming personality they just totally steal your heart. Merlin is an absolutely sweet and stunning black Quarab (Quarter horse x Arabian). He is 13 years old but his delightful, loving, innocent nature makes him seem much younger. In addition to his eye catching looks, great build, intelligence and athletic potential, he's a complete puppy dog on the ground and he will bond tighter than glue with his partner. He's about 15.2 hands high with gorgeous long legs and a heart shaped blaze on his forehead. If you're looking for a partner that will be delighted to see you and will make you smile every time you walk up, you may have found him.
Merlin is a beautiful mover - more like he's dancing than trotting. His collected trot is very smooth and he can keep it up all day. He's extremely friendly on the ground and likes to be wherever you are and will stand all day for loving and pampering. He thrives a bond with his rider and would love his very own special person. He is not a horse who would do well with a lot of riders- he'll be an amazing horse for his person once he knows them. He does well on the trails even with strange horses and will ride in the front or back. He will also ride out alone but he will be a little more forward moving. With other horses he's much more laid back and content to go at the group's pace. Everyone who sees him falls in love with him and he is a real eye catcher. He's not as black now as he was in the pictures as I don't believe in locking him up to keep him black.
Merlin neck reins very well but he will also direct rein when you want more collection. He's got a quick good turn, lots of impulsion, is flexible and backs well. Knows neck, leg and voices cues. Simply cluck for a trot and kiss for a lope. When he knows your cues, he barely even needs you to do anything. He is generally not spooky or reactive to new things. He has not bucked, reared, bit, or kicked with me or anything like that. Merlin's not aggressive in the pasture and is the low horse. He's been regularly de-wormed, has been kept barefoot, has a current coggins, and had his teeth fully balanced by the dentist in January. He loads well, bathes fine and is good about his feet.
Merlin does have a fair bit of energy under saddle and is a horse that will do best with a job or something mentally stimulating. I would recommend Merlin for a confident intermediate to experienced rider, not because he has ever done anything dangerous with me, but he really needs someone with light hands as he's very responsive and sensitive to cues, and very soft mouthed and he works better from body and leg ques. Also because he's the kind of horse, like most Arabians, who needs to really know his rider before giving them his all. I do not recommend him for a young child.
He'll do well in many areas but may be happiest with some faster paced work, or something that will satisfy is bright mind, although he's very laid back on the ground. I think he would make a great barrel, pole or speed event horse or an endurance prospect! I've taken him around the pole pattern for fun and he really enjoyed it. He's athletic enough to go in any direction you chose. We were told a previous owner may have used him as a mounted shooting horse but I've only used him for trails and pasture work.
Merlin works well in a running martingale and snaffle but will also do well in a mild curb and I've even ridden him with just a halter or a neck rope. He's really improved on picking up his correct leads but it still isn't quite automatic yet particularly on the left. He is very fond of picking up and playing with things in his mouth and inventing things to do when he gets bored, so he's endlessly amusing. It is hard to be depressed around his upbeat and sunny demeanor. The worst I can say about him is that he has had a tendency in the past to toss his head when he's bored and that he can get a little 'hot' or prance if he's been doing a lot of running but he usually quiets down pretty well for me. He's a super fun horse to ride however, if you enjoy a horse with more energy like I do.
Merlin had just been a pasture pet and eye candy for a while before I bought him so I've been giving him a tune up since January. I fell in love with him the minute I saw him so I bought him as a project, but now I feel he's ready for his new partner and best friend to finish him in the direction they choose. He's ready for someone who can take him to the next level - someone who will challenge him to bring out his full potential, or someone who will just enjoy having his, cheerful disposition, delightful antics and loving presence in their pasture. It may take him some time to get over his bond with me and bond with his new rider.
You are welcome to come out for a test drive, but just be warned Merlin will only be sold to a loving, approved home that is a good match. He has really stolen my heart and is a pleasure to have in the pasture. I will be honest with you so please be honest with me about exactly what you're looking for and your abilities. I will tell you if I don't think it would be the right match as both your satisfaction as well as Merlin's is very important to me.
Please no trade offers, or people who can't actually buy a horse for several months. Please do not inquire if you are a rough, tough, 'show 'em who's boss' type, with no desire for a relationship with their horse as a horse like Merlin would definitely not do well in that situation. His bond with his partner is absolutely crucial for his type of personality. I will welcome any questions you may have anytime down the road after you buy him and will gladly give you a lesson in how to best work with him before or after you take him home.
Email or text is the best way to reach me initially since I don't keep my phone on me when I'm out with the horses and my reception in my house is very spotty, it will be answered promptly. Please let me know something about you, your experience and what you are looking for. If you would like to call or text my number, the best time to reach me is after 10 am. I know from previous experience that horses with Merlin's amazing looks, personality and athleticism don't come along every day and don't last long so if you are seriously interested and feel you are a good match for him I encourage you not to wait. Thanks and I wish you well in finding the horse of your dreams!
