| Description |
| NYDRIE FARM Albemarle County, rich in history, is home to Nydrie Stud, a fine horse farm originally part of the Coles estate in the Green Mountain area just south of Charlottesville. THE HOMEPLACE: Originally built in 1891, the 64 room home was disassembled by the family in the seventies. The home site remains, providing the perfect location for a new manor. Three additional tenant homes provide lodging for farm help or staff. THE BARN: Known worldwide for its fine thoroughbred bloodstock, the heart of the farm remains a beautiful ivy covered brick stable with 31 stalls, slate roof and interior courtyard. The barn was built in the late 1800’s and was added onto in the 1930’s. Rich traditions are exemplified in the ornate structure, which has been altered to include handsome, tasteful offices in some of the existing stalls. OUTBUILDINGS: Additional farm buildings include the Fire House, Brick Longing Ring which is ideal for training, an old log blacksmith’s shop, an old sawmill, all lending support to the function and purpose of the farm over the years. EQUESTRIAN HISTORY: The farm has produced some of the finest thoroughbred racing bloodstock known throughout Europe and the United States for most of the twentieth century. The dam of Northern Dancer, the famous foundation sire, “Natalma”, was raised on the property and the recent Kentucky Derby winner, “Go For Gin” was presented at the Saratoga sale by Nydrie. Many stakes winners were raised at Nydrie, most having been sold as yearlings to participate in the famous Saratoga and Kentucky sales. THE PROPERTY: Nydrie consists of 585 acres, with 40% of the property in well kept pastures and the balance in woodland consisting of pine and hardwoods. Totier Creek’s headwaters originate on the property and are abundant in springs throughout, including the pond. Many other locations exist and would be ideal for additional pond sites. The land was part of the original Coles Estate, where Thomas Jefferson’s family was protected during Tarleton’s raid on Monticello. The land enjoys a private setting and is surrounded by other large properties. LOCATION: Just south of Charlottesville, in the Green Mountain area of Albemarle County, known for its gently rolling countryside and large estates. |
