Frequently asked questions
What is a POA horse?
A POA horse, also known as a Pony of the Americas (POA), is a breed of pony developed in the United States. Their name comes from their unique appearance—they have an Appaloosa-type spotted coat pattern and stocky, compact bodies that resemble a small horse rather than a pony. The ancestor of the POA was first bred by Jan Poole in Norwalk, Iowa, in 1954. He crossed two ponies together to create what he called “an improved riding type of pony” for his daughter's riding pleasure. This new breed quickly became popular with children across America and eventually become recognized as its own distinct breed by 1972. Today, POAs are well-known as excellent mounts for children who are just learning how to ride or those who need something smaller than your average horse but still have plenty of spirit and speed. They can be seen competing at all levels of competition such as dressage shows and mounted games competitions due to their highly versatile nature. Outside the saddle these ponies are gentle giants who love attention from people—especially kids! They make wonderful companions both on and off the trail, so if you're looking for an equine companion that would fit into any family setting then look no further than your friendly neighborhood POA!
