We are sadly getting out of breeding... sadly because we love it, we love our mares, and our babies, but mostly because we have such a wonderful stallion in Don Rico.
Don Rico is more than proven. Rico is a branded Hanoverian, born in Germany. He stands 17hh , all black, and licensed with the CSHA. He has given us, over and over again, sound - of mind and body - babies, with substance, nice size, terrific movement, and wonderful temperaments to work with. He has a terrific conception rate – 100% … and often after only one breeding.
Don Rico came to Centaur Breeding Farm as a two-year old. He is from his sire Don Frederico’s first crop – so Don Frederico wasn’t yet famous – which is probably why we could afford him, lucky us!! But in other ways the timing was bad for us in terms of getting him going under saddle. So, throughout his life thus far, he has only received sporadic training. At one point he was accepted in Belinda Trussell’s training program, Belinda being our #1 Canadian 2016 Dressage Team hopeful for the Rio Olympics. She loved him, loved working with him, loved his kids, thought the world of him. However, truth be known, we ran out of money for training and brought him home, where again he became a pasture ornament. However he was a very happy pasture ornament, in that he always had one or more of his ladies with him. So Rico has lived a good life, a normal life.
Rico’s sire Don Frederico stands at Celle, Germany. He is himself a son of the famous Donnerhall. (The 2012 German Olympic Dressage Team consisted of Donnerhall get, including a daughter of Don Frederico.) Also in 2012 Don Frederico earned the prestigious title of Hanoverian Stallion of the Year. Rico’s dam SPS Hoheit, daughter of top dressage stallion Hohenstein, went on to have 2 licensed and successful sons in California, Armani and Worthy Opponent.
Last year, in 2015, was the first year that Don Rico went into the show ring. He competed at First Level Dressage – earning an average of over 70% over the year, and coming in second overall in Canada for the Cadora National awards. Also important, he behaved like a gentleman off-property when he stabled at the Ottawa Dressage Festival.
His kids are starting to be well known. Some of the awards they have won include Canadian Training Level Champion (Diamanda), Ontario Second level Champion (Dark Velvet), Cadora National Champion Second Level (Dasahi), Cadora National Training Level, 2nd place (Dutchy). (Diamanda earned rave reviews from the Championship judges, an international FEI panel. She earned a top score of 79%, getting lots of 8’s, 9’s, and even a 10.) He has many more kids, as well as being successful in the dressage ring, others have found success in the hunter and jumper rings as well as eventing.
Rico is a low maintenance stallion. He is an easy horse to handle. We do in-hand breeding, and having lived with mares all his life, he has learned to be respectful. Nothing like being put in your place by an irate mare! He lives outdoors 24/7, unblanketed, is barefoot. For someone looking for a good breeding stallion – this is your golden opportunity. Much as I don’t want to see him go, I also don’t like seeing him being wasted. Such a stallion should still be producing and contributing to the breeding of good, safe, sound, sane horses, as he has been.
