Athena is a beautiful, multicolored Paint Mare, 14 years old and 15 HH. She loves to hack out and is back road traffic safe. She's careful to step around ducks, kittens, dogs and cats, turkey and deer on the farm, and is ATV and farm equipment safe as well.
She has been professionally trained under saddle-(refreshed-) each spring and fall riding season since I bought her two years ago. She has been handled and worked with, on the ground, each and every day as a therapy horse in training.
In the pasture, Athena is an alpha mare of her "herd"- she has taken care of her disabled companion- and my farm-like a watchdog.
At breakfast and dinner, all I need do is call her name one time and she comes running -at full speed -from the farthest reaches bringing the herd with her! She's hilarious and very convenient if you have other horses.
Don't get me wrong, if it's 99 degrees, you're wearing a riding helmet or have a bridle in your hand and call her, she will NOT come running. In fact, she may even pretend she doesn't hear you. She will wait until you ALMOST reach her in the field far, far away then she will slowly walk even further away.. still pretending she can't hear you...
She is very intelligent and responds wonderfully to clicker training beginning with the clicker & carrots, transitioning from treat to clicker and praise only.
She lunges beautifully to both sides and understands "Waaallk" "Whoa" and "Trot!" She is immediately responsive to hand or arm commands on the ground- and stops exactly in step with me. She would make a spectacular halter show competitor!
Athena has been trained in equine therapy techniques, ground training/lead line through cones, with pool noodles and balls, tarps and bags etc.
She is gentle, patient and kind with her humans (and a good mom to her herd.) Athena once endured a riders full blown anxiety attack (gripping onto the horse like a predator) while under saddle without moving a muscle or becoming alarmed: she calmly waited it out, then carefully and slowly walked on, boosting the rider's confidence with each step: Athena is becoming an amazing therapy horse and now has two full years experience.
She is smooth as silk under saddle and has a fast ground covering gait even gallop, if you want it. She may be 5-Gaited but I don't know- she backs, walks, trots smoothly, canters/lopes then also does a quick crazy legged run that is very smooth to ride.
She loves to go fast and it would be nice if she had a rider who enjoyed going fast! I feel like I'm squashing her spirit sometimes making her just walk when it's so much more fun to run! She runs on the farm often, just because she enjoys it: she looks like a stunning Disney character when she's running and playing!
She is calm and cool in loud arenas or crowds and enjoys a quiet walk in the woods with the same "chill" temperment. At breakfast and dinner, I just call her name and she comes running, bringing her herd the her!
She will stand tied for hours, is great with the farrier, hoses and fly spray. She loves grooming and will stand still for braiding, clipping, mount/dismount.
Athena can be seen in either Mt. Pleasant TN (38474) or Savannah TN (38372) whichever is closest to you for serious, cash buyers and by appointment.
Athena rides both English and Western Saddle or bareback with a halter for more confident riders. She is currently only being ridden in a halter-with no bit- in under saddle refresher training!
Athena is an amazing horse in both looks and personality and is also a great candidate for breeding.
I'm only selling Athena because I'm moving back to Washington D.C. where only multi-millionaires can afford the property to keep a horse. I'm not a horse dealer and I will be sobbing when she goes.
